Back in late 2017, I bought a gaming notebook, boasting an i7-7800HQ processor and a GTX 1050 Ti 5GB graphics card. Despite limited gaming between 2016 and 2022, I effortlessly completed titles such as Doom (2016) on it.
My previous gaming rig included an RX 580, followed by a GTX 1080 – my peak GPU experience – which recently malfunctioned.
I currently possess two GTX 1060 6GB cards, gifts that are now hindering my gaming sessions. The performance struggles are so frustrating that I've resorted to deleting several enjoyable games.
Yesterday, I installed Total War: Warhammer 3. Even with settings cranked to the minimum at 1680p, the card's fan roared, and power draw hit 130-150W.
The download itself consumed countless hours, and playable frame rates only emerged at 840p and minimum graphical settings. The noise persisted.
After this extensive download, the GPU's limitations forced a quick uninstall.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus ran smoothly initially, but insufficient VRAM resulted in frequent stutters, despite the displayed 70fps. Consequently, it joined Warhammer 3 on the uninstall list.
Initially, Halo Infinite restricted texture and effect quality to 'Low'. While a patch appears to have fixed this, the performance remains underwhelming. A warning message still appears concerning the recommended 5GB VRAM.
Doom Eternal ran surprisingly well, even at low settings, delivering impressive visuals. However, higher settings were impossible.
My earlier frustration led to the swift removal of three titles yesterday due to the GPU's limitations.
Furthermore, Nvidia Image Scaling (NIS) functioned well, enhancing image quality. Sadly, NVIDIA's limitations prevent simultaneous use of NIS and HDR with my GTX 1xxx series, a feature reserved for RTX 2000 and 3000 series.
My monitor's HDR isn't remarkable (only 600 nits), but it's noticeably superior to SDR.
Fortunately, my current GPU handles CRPGs/ARPGs adequately, especially turn-based tactical combat games. However, I'm ready to upgrade when GPU pricing becomes more favorable, perhaps in a year.
A new gaming laptop with a replaceable battery is also appealing.
