Broken Glass Studios proudly announces The Dark Mod 2.1, a free, open-source, independent stealth game, available now!
This significant update makes The Dark Mod entirely self-sufficient. No longer is Doom 3 required; it's a completely separate experience. We've dedicated considerable resources to replacing all sounds, textures, visual effects, and character models. This change should greatly expand our player base.
AI enhancements are substantial. Guard interactions are more realistic; they now communicate regularly and call for assistance effectively. Improved hearing, combined with a new AI vision slider, allows players to customize the challenge level. AI responses to fallen enemies are more diverse. A critical bug impacting enemy vulnerability has been patched. Archers now draw melee weapons if approached. Guards react to unexpectedly opening doors. New voice lines add realism to combat scenarios. AI search patterns have seen improvement. Numerous additional bugs have been fixed.
A new gameplay element is the AI's response to fallen bodies, especially those in heavy armor. This adds a strategic layer; players must consider enemy placement before eliminating targets.
Audio improvements include new voice packs in addition to the replacement of numerous Doom 3 sounds. Footstep sounds have a higher fidelity. Sound propagation has been overhauled, providing mappers greater control over how sound behaves in their creations.
Visual enhancements are visible in several character models, particularly the skeleton, civilians, and beggars. Arrows now leave blood trails. Many other glitches have been eradicated; for example, the "crate umbrella" exploit has been removed. A full list of changes can be found here: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Changes_in_TDM_2.00
Due to asset replacements, some missions are incompatible. Roughly 25 missions have updated files. New players needn't worry, but players using older missions might encounter crashes or visual issues. To avoid problems, removing all downloaded missions before updating to version 2.1 is strongly recommended.
Transforming The Dark Mod into a standalone game was a huge effort. Over 100 assets were replaced, and roughly 60 maps were thoroughly inspected for compatibility issues. Despite extensive testing, minor bugs may remain. Please report any graphical issues such as missing textures or misplaced objects. We will address these issues promptly.
To update, run "tdm_update.exe" located in your "darkmod" directory. The "darkmod" folder's location is flexible; simply maintain the folder name. If the update fails, look for "_tdm_update.exe", rename it, and try again. For new downloads, visit: http://www.thedarkmod.com/downloads/
