I know it's not a favorite among hardcore fans, but I've genuinely enjoyed the Call of Duty series, and hoping someone from Activision or the development team sees this makes it all worthwhile. A long shot, I know. What follows is a bit of a gripe, so my apologies in advance.
I've been a devoted player since COD2; Modern Warfare 3 was the pinnacle, in my opinion. I'd gladly pay full price for it today if it were on the PS4. That game had it all; it truly let you customize your play style, adapting to the maps. The weapon selection felt balanced, almost like rock-paper-scissors. I could build a lightning-fast character, a stealthy one, or a tactical powerhouse— the possibilities were incredible. The maps were especially brilliant, requiring both attack and defense strategies. It was entertaining on both sides, unlike some other forced approaches. I’m a Team Deathmatch player only— I've never liked other game modes in any COD title.
Black Ops 2 was disappointing because the stealth perk needed constant movement; this diminished my preferred sneaky, tactical approach. The same problem plagued Call of Duty: Ghosts; again, no true silent class, killing my play style. Despite this, I still played them a bit— the semi-automatic rifles were passable and accepted silencers.
Let's not dwell on Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3, and Infinite Warfare. Suffice it to say I didn’t enjoy them. Robots and sci-fi settings aren't my cup of tea. My attempts with those games decreased with each new installment; I even rented Infinite Warfare and played multiplayer for less than an hour. The experience was subpar.
So, I eagerly awaited Call of Duty: World War II— finally, a return to classic COD gameplay after years of wall-running and boosting madness! What could go wrong? At its worst, it couldn't be worse than Ghosts, which I half enjoyed.
This game has several infuriating aspects. I understand some might appeal to other players, but not someone who prefers the older style of gameplay. Let me list them:
Headquarters: I didn't like Destiny's social hub and this feels equally unnecessary. Simpler menus would suffice. I've avoided those first challenge selections, likely forever. Why can't I simply select challenges as I always could? I just want to pick Team Deathmatch and play. I have children and limited time; this Headquarters feature is completely wasted on me.
Perk system changes: I gave the new perk system a chance, but it failed to win me over. SMGs are the only guns that can equip silencers— frustrating for a rifle enthusiast. Similarly, only rifles allow bayonet attachments; another annoying limitation. As a rifle player who has never used the Stalker perk (it felt like it decreased my accuracy when aiming), my Infantry class at level 4 is now useless. This is probably the most frustrating aspect. My preferred weapon type is essentially unusable, rendering other soldier types ineffective. I can’t use silencers on decent weapons. The “Ghost” perk is gone unless I use a sniper rifle, which I never have. This feels like the game prioritizes SMG and sniper playstyles, leaving others behind. Customization is severely lacking. The game rewards constant movement instead of tactical approaches. The semi-automatic rifles are inexplicably terrible. They've always been my go-to weapon; what happened? Did they change aim settings?
I yearn for a game that lets players use their preferred styles without restriction. I've given up hope of enjoying another COD game. These changes are baffling.
I would happily pay a monthly fee for Modern Warfare 3 with regular map releases. I won't pay for map packs when the game quality is this low.
